Ballston  

Location  The western end of Arlington’s  Rosslyn-Ballston corridor. Ballston offers a great balance between access to Northern Virginia and access to DC,

Metro  Ballston Metro is located on the Orange and Silver lines

Character Ballston is full of tall apartment and office buildings, particularly along Fairfax Drive, but within a few blocks north or south it really adopts a more suburban neighborhood character, with rowhouses and single family homes. Ballston offers a great blend of city and suburban life.

Not to Miss 

Taste of Arlington, an annual street fair with fabulous food in Ballston.

Capitals Iceplex (the Caps training facility) where you can skate, play hockey, or play broomball throughout the week.

Clarendon

Location Clarendon is a neighborhood in Arlington County, Virginia, located between the Rosslyn area and the Ballston area. Because of the local street network configuration, many of Clarendon’s 40-45 blocks resemble triangles rather than squares. The precise dimensions of Clarendon are not defined, and several different sets of boundaries are often used.

Character Clarendon has a commercial district that rivals many major shopping areas in DC, but it also has offices, apartment buildings, townhouses, and single family homes in the same area. It’s very compact and easy to walk around, with quiet tree-lined residential streets just a few blocks from the restaurants and bars along Wilson Boulevard

Kinderhaus Toys Kinder Haus Toys is an old-fashioned store that stands for service, selection, and style. The array of high quality children’s products includes toys, books, hobbies, crafts, clothes, shoes, and sporting goods. The toys are, for the most part, powered by imagination — not batteries

CD Cellar CD Cellar has been a favorite of music fans buying and selling CDs, LPs, and DVDs for 20 years  literally tens of thousands of titles to choose from—and best of all, you can ask to hear almost everything in the shop at one of their listening stations.

Eating and Drinking 

Circa  Try the sweet fries and a turkey burger.  Check out the outdoor bar area and do some people watching.

Fairlington 

Location Fairlington is an unincorporated neighborhood located adjacent to Shirlington in the southernmost part of the county on the boundary with the city of Alexandria.  The main thoroughfares are Interstate 395 (Shirley Highway) which divides the neighborhood into North and South Fairlington, State Route 7 (King Street) and State Route 402 (Quaker Lane).

Metro There is no direct metro stop at Fairlington however, Metrobus 22, a Pike Ride route, provides service Monday-Saturday between South Fairlington and both the Ballston-MU and Pentagon Metro stations. The route also serves North Fairlington, Shirlington, Barcroft, and Buckingham.

Character The neighborhood consists almost entirely of townhouses and condominiums  built in the 1940s. Fairlington is listed on both the National Register of Historic Places and on the Virginia Landmarks Register.

Shirlington

Location Shirlington is an unincorporated urban area, officially called an “urban village”, in the southern part of Arlington county adjacent to the Fairlington area. The word “Shirlington” is a combination of “Shirley” (from the Shirley Highway or Interstate 395) and “Arlington”.

Metro  There is no direct metro stop, however, Shirlington Bus Station is Arlington’s only enclosed public bus station and is the principal transfer point for Metrobus and ART bus service in South Arlington.

Character The neighborhood fans out from its core at Shirlington Village, where the restaurants and shops are.  A very friendly and quaint area that retains its charm despite growth.  Shirlington has become a mecca for young professionals who work in the District or at nearby federal agencies. There are tons of young singles living in the area’s condos and apartments, as well as lots of small families.

Eating and Drinking 

Carlyle  Blue crap fritters, tex mex eggrolls, pork chops, eggs benedict, old fashioned banana pudding you can’t go wrong at this local favorite.

Guapos Informal Tex-Mex restaurant offering up a kids’ menu, margarita pitchers & outdoor seating.

Cheesetique  A mix of brasserie and hip wine bar. The food menu is diverse and descriptive with atypical wineries.   Try the pimiento cheese sandwich.

South Arlington

Location South Arlington is an unincorporated area in Arlington county. It comprises the part of the county south of U.S. Route 50/Arlington Boulevard. (Arlington is broken into North and South Arlington) to include both Pentagon City and Crystal City.   Crystal City is a sub-section of Arlington, VA. The area is anywhere from 1 – 2 miles from DC and National Airport.

Character  There are lots of office building and most are connected to the “Crystal City Underground” These are shops/restaurants that run the length of Crystal City. Most of these places are not open on the weekends as they service the office building in the area. However, this is a lot more than just the underground in the area. hop at the Underground Shops, Pentagon City Mall, Pentagon Centre Mall, or Pentagon Row.

Eating and Drinking

Sine Irish Pub TV sports Sunday night trivia and typical Irish food.  A popular Pentagon Row hangout.  Try the steak and eggs.

Epic Smokehouse  BBQ at its best with a keen sense of design.  A Southern style smoker gives this food some serious flavor.
